YouTube is doubling the climb for new creators. From February 1, 2027, a channel applying for ad and Premium revenue sharing will need 1,000 subscribers plus 8,000 qualified watch hours in the last 365 days, or 20 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days. The current bar is 4,000 hours or 10 million Shorts views, so the new thresholds are exactly twice as high.
The change was published by YouTube on August 10, 2026, and confirmed in its Help Center article on the Partner Program update. The subscriber requirement does not change: it stays at 1,000. What changes is only the watch-time and Shorts-view side of the application.
The higher bar applies only to new applicants. If you are already in the YouTube Partner Program, your status is not affected by this update. That distinction matters, because much of the early reaction framed it as every creator losing ground. Existing partners keep their place; it is the next wave of applicants that faces the steeper climb.
There is a second date that matters more than February 1 for creators already earning. Updated monetization terms must be accepted in YouTube Studio by January 31, 2027: the Watch Page Monetization Module, the Shorts Monetization Module, and where applicable the Commerce Product Module. If those terms are not accepted by then, earnings from the associated features stop on February 1 until they are accepted. Accepting the terms does not change a channel's standing in the program itself.
Not everything moves. The lower fan-funding tier stays exactly where it is: 500 subscribers plus 3,000 qualified watch hours in the last year or 3 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days still unlocks Super Chats, channel memberships, and Shopping features. YouTube also confirmed no changes to eligibility for fan funding, Creator Partnerships, or Shopping.
For a creator posting every day, the practical read is simple. First, put January 31, 2027 on the calendar now if you already monetize, because that is a paperwork deadline with a real off-switch. Second, if you are close to the current 4,000-hour bar, applying before February 1 means being judged under it; after that date the same channel needs 8,000. Third, treat watch time as the metric that matters: hours viewers actually finish, and Shorts views that qualify, not raw upload counts.
The doubling is also a signal about where YouTube thinks the platform is going. Shorts now pull enormous daily viewing, and the company is raising the entry price for ad sharing while keeping the early-earning fan-funding tier open. For new creators, the path is still open, but it is longer: build the subscriber base, stack qualified hours or Shorts views, and get the terms accepted before the deadline if you are already in.
