Most beginners spend their budget on cameras and ignore audio, but viewers forgive slightly soft video far more easily than muffled or echoing sound. Your phone's built-in microphone is a reasonable starting point if you record in a quiet room, close to the phone and away from fans, traffic noise and running water. If you can afford one small upgrade, a basic wired earphone microphone or a clip-on lavalier microphone will improve your sound more than any camera accessory.

For video, your phone's front camera is usually enough, provided the lighting is good. Face a window during the day for soft, even light, or use a single desk lamp angled toward you rather than behind you. Light behind you turns your face into a silhouette, which is the most common beginner mistake. Place the phone at eye level using a stack of books if you do not have a tripod, and frame yourself from the chest up so your reactions are clearly visible.

The most important rule of reaction videos is to actually watch the content for the first time on camera. Viewers can tell when a reaction has been rehearsed, and a faked surprise feels uncomfortable rather than entertaining. Watch the video once through without pausing constantly, and let your genuine responses happen. You can always trim pauses and long silences afterwards, but you cannot fake the natural timing of a real first reaction.

Keep your commentary balanced with the original video. Talk during natural pauses, react briefly during key moments, and avoid talking over every line of dialogue, because viewers came to see both your reaction and the original content. A good rhythm is to let a scene play, react to it, then add a short comment before the next scene. If you record your reaction and the original video as separate tracks, you can adjust the volume balance afterwards so neither one drowns out the other.

When editing, cut the video down to its strongest moments. A reaction video that runs long because nothing was cut will lose viewers, while a tight edit that keeps only genuine laughs, surprises and thoughtful comments holds attention. Add captions, because many viewers watch with sound off at first and decide within seconds whether to keep watching. Choose a thumbnail or opening frame that shows a clear, expressive reaction rather than a blank or neutral face.

Before posting, check the platform's rules on using other people's content, and always credit the original creator. Reaction videos work best when they add something: your commentary, your perspective or your humour. Simply re-uploading someone else's video with minimal input is unlikely to grow an audience and can cause copyright problems. When your reaction genuinely adds value, viewers return for your take, not just for the clip you reacted to.

Before you record your first reaction video, run through a short checklist. Is the room quiet and is the light on your face rather than behind you? Is the phone steady at eye level and is there enough storage for the recording? Have you chosen a video you genuinely have not seen before, and do you know the main points you want to react to without scripting every word? After recording, watch the edit once with sound off to check the captions, and once with sound on to check the audio balance. If both passes feel good, post it and move on to the next one. Your first reaction video will not be perfect, and it does not need to be. The creators who grow are the ones who publish, learn from the response, and improve one thing in the next video.
