The world has changed in countless ways over the past decade, let alone the past century. So even though society has come a long way in certain regards, it’s only natural for us to want to look back on the past as well.

When it comes to why humans are so obsessed with nostalgia , the University of Florida College of Medicine notes that it can make a person feel all warm and fuzzy inside by boosting their self-esteem. It can reinforce a person’s self-worth, while simultaneously helping them find meaning in their life.

At the same time, nostalgia can encourage authenticity. When we look back on the past, it can remind us to stay rooted in our beliefs and stay true to our values. Plus, there’s no question that indulging in nostalgia can make you feel happy. Reminiscing is a great way to get a quick dopamine boost.

There are certain situations that are particularly powerful when it comes to triggering nostalgia. These include certain sensory experiences, like smelling fresh apple pie or hearing your grandmother’s favorite song. Major life transitions and social interactions with loved ones might also have the same effect.

It’s important to note, however, that like everything else in life, we should indulge in nostalgia in moderation. As beautiful as it can be to look back on the past, you don’t want to get stuck there. If you’re spending so much time reminiscing that you forget to be present, it may begin to hinder your personal growth. Plus, it can actually lead to an increase in anxiety in people who are natural worrywarts.

Valentina Stoycheva, PhD, explains in a piece for Psychology Today that nostalgia is often more about yearning for a past version of yourself than it is about a particular time or place. “Perhaps we felt more carefree, perhaps we felt joy or a sense of accomplishment, or perhaps we felt loved and more connected to our loved ones,” she notes. Instead of getting caught up in the past, you might be able to find a way to reconnect with that side of yourself in the present.
