British history is essentially one very long dramatic series that nobody greenlit but everyone ended up watching anyway. Spanning centuries of monarchs behaving badly, empires expanding with remarkable audacity, and a national talent for understatement that borders on performance art, it is the gift that keeps on giving to anyone with a sense of humor and a loose grip on the timeline.

The internet, naturally, has thoughts. Many of them have been turned into memes, which is the only format that truly does justice to a nation that once colonized a quarter of the world and responded to losing most of it by making a strong cup of tea. A YouGov poll asked Britons how they feel about their own history, and the results are about as British as it gets. 53% landed on the diplomatic middle ground of "reasons to be proud, but also reasons to be ashamed," which is essentially the national answer to everything from the Empire to a soggy Bank Holiday.

32% felt Britain had more reasons for pride than any other major country, 9% leaned toward shame, and the remaining 6% were presumably still thinking about it over a biscuit. Almost 8 out of every 10 people agreed that history teaching should present both the positive and the negative without nudging students toward any particular conclusion. So although these memes won't make it into the school books any time soon, it doesn't stop us from having a laugh.

If you assumed history was only for academics and people who go to bed before ten, the British Museum would like a word. Its special exhibition of the Bayeux Tapestry , a 70-metre embroidered account of the Norman Conquest from 1066, sold 100,000 tickets in under 24 hours, breaking records and causing the kind of scramble usually reserved for concert drops and limited-edition trainers.

Apparently, the story of a medieval invasion rendered in wool thread is exactly what people needed, and they needed it urgently. It seems the history nerds were always among us; they were just being very quiet about it.

The Roman statesman and philosopher Cicero understood the importance of history, even way back when he was still busy making it. "To be ignorant of what occurred before you were born is to remain always a child." He said this roughly 2,000 years ago, which means people have been making the case for history education for longer than most modern countries have existed.

It also means that every person who has ever said "I just don't find history interesting" has been implicitly called a child by one of the ancient world's most celebrated thinkers, which feels like consequence enough.
